    Night Watchman Tour

One of the best free activities in Denmark is Ribe's 45-minute night watchman tour, which departs from out the front of Weis Stue, on Torvet, once or twice a night in the warmer months.

Nowadays, it's a stroll through the town's historic streets, designed to entertain and educate visitors to Ribe, but the night watchman's walk was originally born of necessity. As early as the 14th century these watchmen made their nightly rounds in Ribe, making sure the streets were safe for locals to walk. They were also charged with being on the lookout for fires or floods threatening the town. The job was abolished in Ribe in 1902, but reinstated in 1935 as a tourist attraction. These…

  4. Bycykler

Long before Paris got in on the act of free bikes, Copenhagen had its famous Bycykler, allowing anyone to borrow a bicycle for free. In all there are over 1000 bikes available from 1 May to 15 December.

These gearless bicycles are rudimentary and are certainly not practical for long-distance cycling, but that's part of the plan - use of the cycles is limited to the city centre. To deter theft and minimise maintenance, the bicycles have a distinctive design that includes solid spokeless wheels with puncture-resistant tyres. The bikes can be found at 110 widely scattered street stands in public places, including S-train stations.

The way it works is that if you're able to…

  5. Lalandia

Denmark’s largest swimming area, Lalandia really undersells itself using the term waterpark. It does have three covered pools, water slides, Jacuzzis and a wave machine, but there are also all kinds of other satellite attractions: a Blue-Flag beach, golf courses, pitch and field sports, a skating rink, five different restaurants, the indoor playground Monky Tonky Land, and children’s shows and discos. Most people come on an accommodation package, with a minimum two-night stay (from around 2000kr in the high season). ‘Residents’ get in free to the waterpark and indoor playground, and enjoy priority hours. Lalandia is 5km northwest of the small port of Rødbyhavn, in the…

  7. Hjejlen

The Hjejlen, the world’s oldest operating paddle steamer, has been faithfully plying the waters of the Lake District since it was first launched in 1861. These days the boat shuttles tourists from Silkeborg to the foot of Himmelbjerget during the summer season (10am and 2pm daily, July to mid-August). The operators have other boats regularly plying the same route during this period, and from May to September. The route (adult one way/return 75/105kr, 1¼ hours) takes in a wealth of river and lake scenery and is one of the most popular outings in the Lake District.

  8. Djurs Sommerland

If you’re travelling with hyperactive kids, let them drag you to one of Djursland’s biggest drawcards, Djurs Sommerland. It’s a much-hyped amusement park with arguably the best outdoor rides in Jutland (more than 60) and a waterpark, with pools and waterslides for all ages. Your wallet may feel the sting, however, when you realise that everyone over the age of three pays the same entrance fee; once this is paid, though, you’re free to play to your heart’s content. Closing hours vary (from 5pm to 9pm in July and August).

  9. Bakken

Dyrehaven is also home to the 1538-founded Bakken, which is said to be the world’s oldest amusement park. The cynical might say it looks it, but if you approach it in the right frame of mind (admittedly, a couple of beers and some candy floss helps), Bakken can be a lot of fun. This is very much an old-school funfair experience, with creaking 1970s rides, tame rollercoasters, appalling fast food and cheesy cabarets. There are about 33 rides in all, as well as roughly 40 cafes and restaurants.See website for specific opening times.

  14. Maritimt Center Danmark

In high summer, the Maritimt Center Danmark runs cruises on the historic wooden sailing ship Meta, and there’s often pirate-related fun for kids – contact the centre for details. Another vintage ship is the M/S Helge, which sails in Svendborg Sound. While you’re down at the harbour, look for Sejlskibsbroen, a jetty lined with splendidly preserved sailing ships opposite where the Ærø ferry docks.

  15. Harbour Buses

The harbour boat-bus service runs from the Black Diamond to Nordre Toldbod just south of the Little Mermaid, stopping at Knippelsbro, Nyhavn, the Opera House and twice in Holmen along the way. Single tickets cost a steep 36kr, are valid for one hour and can also be used on the buses, metro and S-tog. Boats sail every 20 minutes until 8pm (7pm on Sunday). 18. Odense Åfart

From May to mid-September, Odense Åfart runs 35-minute river rides to the wooded Fruens Bøge area, where there’s a ‘nature playground’ full of giant wooden toadstools and centipedes. From here, it’s a 15-minute walk to Den Fynske Landsby. The boat stops at Odense Zoo en route. Trips leave Munke Mose on the hour from 10am and 5pm.

  20. Margrethe I

Jump on board a one-hour cruise on the Margrethe I in summer and soak up the sun – and Viborg – from out on the lake. There are additional tours from late June; the boat departs from outside Golf Salonen on Randersvej. From mid-May to late September, you can also rent canoes and rowboats here for lake exploration (45/70r for 30/60 minutes).

    Amager Strandpark

If brisk water doesn't deter you, the greater Copenhagen area has several bathing areas. This beach has undergone a total transformation in recent years and is now a spectacular sheltered lagoon, with acres of sandy beach and, during summer, a festival atmosphere most days with cafés and bars. Playground facilities and shallow water make it ideal for children.
