Lonely Planet review for Bahía de Taganga

Taganga is a beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay and small fishing village just north of Santa Marta. It's fast developing into a backpacker hang-out and scuba-diving center, where you can sign up for cheap dive courses, and the beach is packed with boats, restaurants and bars. Playa Grande, a magnificent bay just northwest of the village, is a short walk away.

    Taganga is Fantastic!!

    jessicarose recommends this,

My friends and I had a great time in Taganga. We didn't see or hear of any volience while we were there. As with all places in Colombia and South America....actually anywhere in the world, there is a risk of being mugged or running in to the wrong people. Please dont let the other reviews put you off. Taganga is a popular place for Colombian families to holiday. The locals are friendly and welcoming. The bars and clubs are great. The beaches probably aren't the best beaches you will see in Colombia but they are great for chilling out on. Go to Taganga and make up your own mind!

    Taganga is dangerous

    memilia84 does not recommend this,

For anyone planning on travelling to Taganga i would advice them to think it twice. I was in Taganga on january 23 and 24 2011 and I got robbed on my first night over there. I was knocking on my hostel´s door and out of the blue a guy grabed me by my neck and threatened me with a knife. He then threw me to the floor and kicked me several times: he broke my toe. Fortunately i was with a friend and he defended me and the thieve ran away. I went the next day to the local police who couldn´t do anything, not even a report: they just gave me a piece of paper. Afterwards i met in Taganga, and in Bogotá, at least 7 more people who had also been robbed in Taganga (2 americans, a canadian, and australians). Plus, the hostess at my hostel told us that a lot of people had been robbed. I think the place it´s not worth the risk. There are plenty more beautiful places in the colombian coast (such as Cabo de la Vela in La Guajira) that are much safer. Hope this is useful for someone.

Dirty, Ugly and Very Dangerous place

    adrifranco does not recommend this,

The place is very dirty and the local just want to get some money out of the tourists. The beaches were a huge disapointment. They are all dirties. You can find at any beach like at the whole Colombian Coastline bottles, cigarettes, papers, rest of foods, woods, fish nets, plastics. Even at Bahia Concha at Tayrona National Park, which was supposed to be the best beach around Santa Marta and Taganga we were very disapointed. The locals do not preserve their beaches at all. In Taganga at our last day we got robbed. That was a deadly weapon assault. It was really scary. They took everything when we were leaving the main beach Playa Grande and iam sure they were about to kill us if we had nothing to give to them. I went to the local police but they said .." Sorry but we can not do anything, not even a report". Eventually i found out that police is corrupted and know all thieves from there. It is just a big scam..!! Disgusting place.....and serious... ugly and the beaches are not nice at all....The locals just want to take money out of the tourists and don't let you chill out not even fora a minute. If someone wants to go to a one million times better beach, do not waste your time and go to Brazil...
