Lonely Planet review for Green Lake Park
Get here early in the morning to take a stroll (or perhaps dance with the retired ladies), then chill in one of the lakeside cafés. Sunday is the best time to come. Also try to pay a visit late September to early October for the Lantern Festival, when simply everyone in the city seems to set a paper lantern boat with candle inside adrift on the waters - outstanding photo op!

one of those great city parks
melyuan recommends this,
Kunming is a Chinese backwater of a mere 4 million people but I'm going to be so bold as to compare it with those other great city parks - Central Park, Tiergarten. That's because it's like a great big green living room where people do _stuff_. Play mahjong, stroll, eat, sit, watch the passers-by and generally live. It's as un-natural as you'd expect to with collections of paths, buildings and other various constructions. Definitely a people-watching highlight.
