  2. Moose Cree Outdoor Discoveries & Adventures

Run by the Moose Cree First Nation, this outfit offers customized trips incorporating cultural activities (storytelling and traditional foods, for example), along with canoeing in summer and snowshoeing in winter. The friendly and laid-back staff will ask you two questions when tailoring your adventure: ‘what do you want to experience?’ and ‘what are you not looking for?’ From there, they can organize absolutely anything, just make sure to give them plenty of time. Prices vary greatly depending on whether you’re one person or many, and whether you want a one-day island tour or a weeklong wilderness expedition. These highly recommended trips offer a unique opportunity to e…

  3. Naturally Superior Adventures

Naturally Superior Adventures is based 8km southwest of Wawa. Its lodge quietly sits along Lake Superior between a craggy expanse of stone and smooth sandy beach. A day on the grounds is itself a memorable experience, as cool mists roll through in the afternoon and the evening sun gently melts into the lake. Naturally Superior guided day trips ($95) depart several times a week, while relaxed weekend kayaking trips ($350) feature an afternoon of instruction, a night at the lodge, and a night of beach camping while paddling on Lake Superior. These trips are suitable for total beginners. Intermediate paddlers can be outfitted with their own kayaks and canoes for $35 to $45 p…

  4. Haliburton Forest

This privately owned woodland, 30km north of Haliburton town, can be accessed through its main office on Kenneisis Lake. The recommended ‘Walk in the Clouds’ four-hour guided hike ($95) takes you on a pulse-quickening adventure along suspended planks (20m above the ground) through the treetops while providing a bird’s-eye view of the woods below. A visit to the Wolf Centre is included; here visitors can glimpse a pack of wolves (at a safe distance, of course) as they meander through their 6-hectare enclosure. Thick pillows of snow in the winter encourage a thriving snowmobiling culture, and dogsledding is a popular attraction as well ($185 for a full-day guided tour inclu…

    Ontario Place

A 40-hectare fun park, Ontario Place is built on three artificial islands. A ‘Play All Day’ pass gets you into most of the thrill rides and attractions, including Soak City water park, and walk-up seating at the Cinesphere, a spiky, space-age gooseberry screening IMAX films. Kids go berserk at soft-play areas like the H2O Generation Station and the Atom Blaster. Additional attractions like the human-sized MegaMaze and House of Blues concerts at the Molson Amphitheatre cost extra. Discounted passes may be available after 5pm and for grounds-only admission. On rainy days, many of the rides, activities and restaurants close.

  8. Wayne Gretzky Estates

Hockey: it’s not just about beers and brawls anymore, at least since Ontario’s favorite son, NHL hockey legend Wayne ‘The Great One’ Gretzky, embarked on a new career as a winemaker. Wayne Gretzky Estates opened in 2009 and is producing a veritable rainbow of wines, from cab-merlot blends to ice wine to Rieslings. Before you doubt that a switch from hockey pro to viticulturist is possible, know that No 99, as it’s dubbed, has won several awards. Nevertheless, we doubt Ontario’s legions of rabid hockey fans will be switching from beer to wine anytime soon.

  9. Rideau Canal

Ottawa's most famous outdoor attraction, the Rideau Canal, became Canada's 14th location to be named a Unesco national historic site on June 28, 2007. It's ideal for boating with parks, small towns, lakes and many places to stop en route, and in winter, it turns into the longest skating rink in the world.

The 7km of groomed ice features numerous rest stops and changing stations, but most importantly, skaters can pause to purchase a scrumptious slab of fried dough called beavertails. The tourism office on Wellington St has information about skate rentals.

  10. SSteam Whistle Brewing

‘Do one thing and do it well,’ is the motto of Steam Whistle Brewing, a microbrewery that makes only a crisp European-style pilsner. Bubbling away in a 1929 train depot, Steam Whistle continually works on being environmentally friendly, in part by using renewable energy, steam heating, all-natural (and often local) ingredients, and using super-cool ginger ale bottles that can be reused up to 40 times. During snappy tours of the premises, guides explain the brewing process in great detail. Tours depart half-hourly from 1 to 5pm and include tastings.

    High Park

Toronto’s biggest park is the delightfully unkempt High Park – unfurl a picnic blanket, swim, play tennis, cycle around, ice-skate or just sit amongst great stands of oaks and watch the sunset. Also here is the stage for Dream in High Park, Grenadier Pond where people ice-skate in winter, the animal paddocks (a small children’s zoo) and Colborne Lodge, a Regency-style cottage built in 1836 by the Howard family, who donated much of High Park to the city in 1873.

    Whirlpool Aero Car

Dangling above the Niagara River, 4.5km north of Horseshoe Falls, the Whirlpool Aero Car was designed by Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo and has been operating since 1916 (but don’t worry – it’s still in good shape). The gondola travels 550m between two outcrops above a deadly whirlpool created by the falls – count the logs and tires spinning in the eddies below. No wheelchair access.
