  18. Escape Bistro & Gallery

Just across from the Salmon Stewardship Centre, this excellent reinvention of a once-tired resto-bar is a revelation. The old-school dining room (try for a booth) has been enlivened with local artworks and there's live Friday and Saturday guitar music to keep things animated. The menu combines simple home-cooked dishes with lip-smacking European fare like Hungarian goulash and Vienna schnitzel – go for Friday's pork-roast special. Excellent service.

  19. Emerald Coast Vineyards Wine Shop

This handsome wood-gabled, family-run winery building looks like it should be somewhere else but it's an indication that Alberni is moving on from its gritty past. Step inside for free tastings made from locally grown grapes: the dessert-like blueberry port is well worth a sip or three.

  20. Eclectic Med

The name sums up the menu, which brings a Mediterranean accent to local standards like Alberta steaks, lake fish and lots of valley veggies. Plates are artfully presented.
