The view from the bell tower and tiled rooftop of the San Felipe Neri convent more than explains Sucre’s nickname of the ‘White City of the Americas.’

    Cathedral

Just east of the main plaza, the cathedral has fine stained-glass above the altar. The adjacent tower was constructed by the Jesuits as part of a church before Oruro was founded. When the Jesuits were expelled, it was designated as the cathedral of the Oruro bishopric.

In 1994, the original baroque entrance was moved and reconstructed at the Santuario de la Virgen del Socavón (Virgin of the Grotto), which presents a grand city view. It was here that 16th-century miners began worshipping the Virgen de Candelaria, the patron of Oruro miners. The present church, which is a 19th-century reconstruction of the 1781 original, figures prominently in Oruro's Carnaval as the site…

    Snack Antonella

  19. Restaurant Un Gusto a Más

Get Brazilian-style grub at Bolivian prices at this bright, popular eatery, run by a hard-working Bolivian-Brazilian family. The self-serve spread is modest but tasty, with dishes from both sides of the border, and the dining area is spacious and colorful.

    Casa de los Paceños

Local families and visitors alike love this place for upscale versions of classic paceño (local La Paz) dishes like saice (meat stew), chairo (beef soup) and fritanga (spicy pork). It's probably best not to know what some of these dishes are - the menu's translation doesn't do the flavor justice. But to give you a taster: try the ranga (boiled cow tongue).

  24. El Chorro

A few kilometers upstream from the town, El Chorro is an idyllic beauty spot with a waterfall and pool. You can reach it by boat only; enquire at the harbor. On a rock roughly opposite El Chorro is an ancient serpentine engraving, which was intended as a warning to travelers: whenever the water reached serpent level, the Beni was considered unnavigable.
