Parc d'Attractions & Fountain, Sétif
An amusement park might not be what you came to Algeria to see (and its attractions are lame by comparison to any European park), but it is worth walking through here, if only to marvel at its existence and at the fact that it is so popular. For while cinemas, bowling alleys and other civic amenities in so many northern towns have remained closed since the end of the black years of sectarian violence, the Parc d’Attractions pulls in the pundits. The park is a large open space of gardens, cafés, and booths selling CDs. In the centre, there is a boating lake, dodgem, big wheel and various other amusements, which really come into their own in summer. Away from the park, an…

AHNET Voyages
The centre of Adrar is an absolutely enormous main square, the place des Martyrs – you could just about land a plane on it! Around it are the main buildings: the banks, post office, Air Algérie and the main hotel, the Hôtel Touat. Inside the hotel you’ll find AHNET Voyages which organises tours in the region and beyond. The local tourist office seems to serve primarily as a craft shop and can’t provide any useful information about Adrar or travel in the region. There’s an internet café in the Maison de la Culture on the main square, and a hospital to the east of the square.

They are also involved in projects that help the local community benefit from tourism.

Complexe Nautique
Many Algerians are happy to jump into the sea near the port, but the water is far from clean and you need to drive a long way out of the city to find clean water. Swimming pools can be just as difficult to find. The Complexe Nautique has one indoor and two open-air Olympic-sized pools, although you may need to join (and therefore bring a passport) to get into the water.

Dune Climbs
The 30-minute climb up the dunes to experience the jaw-dropping view is a must. The sand sea stretches out to the east, while the oasis, its river and palm groves are spread out before you to the west. Take a lead from the local kids and have a slide down a dune on a piece of tin or cardboard.
