Lonely Planet review for Military Museum
From the humble swords and rifles of earlier eras, to the tanks and fighter planes of more modern times, as well as surface-to-air missiles, there’s enough hardware on display here to start WWIII. But despite the martial tone, this is one of Beijing’s more popular museums. The sections on China’s many wars are fascinating, although there’s a lack of English captions.

not just for military enthusiasts

The somewhat snarky comment from the Lonely Planet review "purely for military enthusiasts" probably reveals more about the reviewer than the museum.
I am not a military enthusiast, but I purely enjoyed the museum. Governments founded on violent revolution often owe their existence to their military, and this museum gives one perspective on a whopper of a story: the rise of Communist China. It also has a lot of coverage of warfare throughout China's long history. To understand a great culture, you must understand how it fights, and they often reflect one another. This museum should not be missed for anyone wanting to understand China. Granted, it's a little on the Stalinist side, and its filled with propaganda, and some displays are a little dated. But it has a perspective as well as artifacts you will never see outside of China!
