Lonely Planet review for Museum of Contemporary Art

A slice of Gotham City on Circular Quay West, the stately art-deco MCA has been raising even the most open-minded Sydney eyebrows since 1991. Constantly changing controversial exhibitions from Australia and overseas range from the incredibly hip to in-your-face, sexually explicit and profoundly disturbing. Impressive. There’s a cool cafe and a museum shop here, too.

Australia's top Museum for Contemporary Art

    missstone recommends this,

For those of you looking for a decent art experience in Sydney, I highly recommend the Museum of Contemporary Art. Its location is iconic. In The Rocks but on Circular Quay, immediately opposite the Sydney Opera House and next to Harbour Bridge. It cannot get much better than that.

It has been shut to the public for several months having undergone a major redevelopment to:
    -refurbish its existing galleries
-build new monumental galleries for temporary exhibitions
-create one whole level dedicated to hangings of its permanent Collections
-create Australia`s first National Centre for Creative Learning with state of the art digital and video-conferencing technologies and a special Jackson Bella Room for children with special needs
-build a cafe and Sculpture Terrace on the roof of the new Mordant wing with views to seriously rival if not surpass those of Paris, London or New York`s art institutions.

The new building reopens on Thursday 29 March 2012 as a world-class art institution with a series of exciting shows including a group exhibition called Marking Time and Christian Marclay`s award-winning 24-hour video The Clock, recently ranked #1 of the top ten art shows of 2011 by The New York Times.

Until the March opening date, the building will remain partially hidden under scaffolding.
However, on 16 December it opened its Level Three Galleries for a free summer exhibition by Mexican-Canadian electronic artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. The show, Recorders, is an interactive experience full of digital machinery that records the public`s voices, finger prints, objects, eyes, thoughts, shadows, etc. It runs until 12 February 2012 from 10am to 5pm daily. And it is fun! To enter the building, go to 140 George Street and take the elevator to Level 3. Again, the entrance is free.
