White-water rafting and wading to waterfalls draw scores of weekenders to Kuala Kubu Bharu, 70km north of Kuala Lumpur. The river-splashed trail to Chiling Waterfalls is the prime attraction, but this sleepy town (known locally as KKB) has become a modest hub for white-water rafting and kayaking on the Sungai Selangor.
The original mining town of Kuala Kubu suffered a series of disastrous floods in the late 19th century. A new town was planned nearby in 1925 using the garden-city model: a compact town centre surrounded by parkland. Remaining 1920s shophouses give the town a pleasant, antique feel.
KKB is a good way station between KL and lofty hill station Bukit Fraser.
