Welcome to Southern Pest
The colourful districts of Józsefváros (Joseph Town) and Ferencváros (Francis, or Franz, Town) – no prizes for guessing which Habsburg emperors these were named after – are traditionally working class and full of students. It’s a lot of fun wandering the backstreets, peeping into courtyards and small, often traditional, shops. Both are ever-changing and developing areas, with new shops, bars and restaurants popping up constantly. Some quarters feel less salubrious than other places in the city, but it's full of interesting and alternative spots, especially places like Mikszáth Kálmán tér, Tűzoltó utca and Ráday utca.
