Lonely Planet review for Art Institute of Chicago
The second-largest art museum in the country, the Art Institute of Chicago has the kind of celebrity-heavy collection that routinely draws gasps from patrons. Grant Wood’s stern American Gothic ? Check. Edward Hopper’s lonely Nighthawks ? Yep. Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on La Grand Jatte ? Here. The museum’s collection of impressionist and postimpressionist paintings is second only to those in France, and the number of surrealist works – especially boxes by Joseph Cornell – is tremendous.

Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago
remelila recommends this,
One of the world's best art museums, the Art Institute is filled with more classics from your high school art class than you can shake a paintbrush at. Pull a Ferris Bueller and lose yourself in the dots of that Seurat painting or have your friend take a picture of you frowning in front of "American Gothic". You'll also find Gustave Caillebotte’s sublime "Paris Street; Rainy Day"; a bunch of trippy works by Dali (including that creepy one with Mae West's face as an apartment); some mind-bending Magrittes; and that darling of frame shops and college kids everywhere, Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks". Go Thursday evenings after 5pm when admission is free.

Art institute of Chicago
meliaph recommends this,
The art institute is full of amazing pieces of art and sculpture. I like to just wander in each room and get lost. But if you prefer to have a tour they do offer some. It is spacious and weekdays are better to go when there are not so many people.

guided tour
mirjaml recommends this,
There are so many beautifull artworks to see, that it will take you days to discover. That's why we took the guided tour. Got a very enthousiastic and well experienced guide who took us across different departments of the museum, linking different cultures and times together though symbolism and colors. Great tour!!
