Getting there & away
Land
Bus
Direct buses run from Montevideo to Buenos Aires via Gualeguaychú, but are slower than land/river combinations across the Río de la Plata. Further north there are bridge crossings over the Río Uruguay from Fray Bentos to Gualeguaychú, Paysandú to Colón and Salto to Concordia. There are plenty of land crossings to Brazil, including Chuy to Chuí and Pelotas, Río Branco to Jaguarão, Rivera to Santana do Livramento, Artigas to Quaraí and Bella Unión to Barra do Quaraí. Buses generally continue through the border and passport formalities are conducted on the bus.
Boat
Most travelers cross from Montevideo to Argentina by ferry, sometimes with bus combinations to Colonia or Carmelo.
Air
Most international flights to/from Montevideo’s Aeropuerto Carrasco pass through Buenos Aires. Many others stop at Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo.
Direct flights go to Porto Alegre, Florianópolis, Rio and São Paulo (Brazil), Asunción (Paraguay) and Santiago (Chile). There are also flights to Santa Cruz de la Sierra and La Paz (Bolivia), and Havana (Cuba) via Buenos Aires.
