Lonely Planet review for Ko Kret
The cheapest and most local way of experiencing riverine Bangkok is by boarding the Chao Phraya Express Boat at any tha (pier) and taking it in either direction to its final stop. Also appealing are the Sunday trips to Ko Kret and back.

See a different city from the river.
eeker recommends this,
Seeing Bangkok from the river's surface was one of the best things I did while spending a few days in the Thai capital. You get a vivid picture of the beautiful chaos of the city. Heavy duty supply pipes contort to accommodate seemingly transient structures, huge hangars of buildings have low slung power lines in front of their gaping entrances, dilapidated shanty houses with matching dilapidated spirit houses (both on stilts), locals mine the boat locks for fish while you climb upstream, market boats slip by and Komodo-like dragons rest by the water's side.
All of this runs by in parallax against the hazy backdrop of the city, all you need to do is sit back in the boat and take it in.
Good for: sight seeing, local vibe, relaxing, sigh
Not good for: nervous sailors
