You’ve travelled for adventure, romance and culture, so why not to make some friends? Taken from Lonely Planet’s 1000 Ultimate Experiences, here’s a list of places where the welcome is always warm.

Ireland

Centuries of turmoil have certainly taken their toll on the Irish: they’ve been left with a deliciously dark sense of humour and a welcoming attitude towards strangers. That famous ability of the Irish – to find craic (fun times with convivial company) in boom or bust times – means you’re always in for a treat. These days, after the end of the ‘Troubles’, a cautious optimism reigns supreme, infecting the land once again with the sense that anything’s possible.

USA

Blamed though they are for the coming of WWIII, the Anti-Christ, Miley Cyrus, Bruce Willis, monster trucks, rampant street crime, and noise pollution through overloud talking, Americans just take it all in their stride. They know there’s no such thing as a ‘typical Yank’, so you can just stuff your stereotypes in a sack, mister! The USA’s citizens will invariably welcome you and help you get the best out of their country - all they ask in return is for you to leave your preconceptions at home.

Malawi

Malawians describe themselves as ‘the friendliest people in Africa’, living in the ‘warm heart of the continent’. Anyone who’s visited will know that the rare (for Africa) cohesion of the country’s ethnic groups is solid evidence for this, as is the people’s propensity to welcome you into their homes as well as their nation. Malawi is small, poor and without a lot of facilities, but with a greeting like that who needs Western-style comfort?

Fiji

Fijians are generally considered to be the ‘friendliest people on the planet’. And why not? They’ve got plenty to smile about – lush islands, kaleidoscopic reefs, cobalt sea, a wealth of marine life, world-class diving, romantic coastlines, awesome cuisine – and they love to spread the love around. Fijians have a rep for helping travellers feel welcome, thereby allowing you to uncover the best from this sprawling group of islands. Just don’t mention the coup.

Thailand

Southeast Asia’s most-visited country is bound to offer a welter of stereotypes and clichés. Here are some: dazzling islands and beaches; lush and balmy weather; great shopping and great food; the ‘France of Asia’. Here’s another one: ‘world’s friendliest people’. Gawd, not another contender (see Fiji and Samoa). Why bother trying to analyse why the Thais are so easygoing and quick to smile? They just are, and that’s all there is to it.

Samoa

What’s this? Samoa reckons it has ‘the world’s friendliest people’? Hmmm, trouble is there’s no ratifying body for such a claim, meaning the Samoans are up against the Fijians, who also claim to hold the title. OK, enough: let’s settle this with a Googlefight. A search for the phrase ‘Fiji world’s friendliest people’ garners 16,600 hits; the phrase ‘Samoa world’s friendliest people’ reaps 13,800. Sorry, Samoa, the interweb has spoken, although travellers can rest assured that your beautiful country harbours lovely and warm people who will leave a deep and lasting impression.

Vietnam

Vietnam is another country inextricably caught up in Western images and stereotypes: napalm, tormented soldiers, Oliver Stone films… But Vietnam put all that behind it a long time ago and is now on a huge drive to become the new ‘Asian tiger’ economy. Economy and history regardless, travellers are bound to get a friendly welcome and plenty of smiles in Vietnam.

Indonesia

It’s hard to make generalisations about a country that contains so many different cultures. Still, from laid-back Lombok to the rice fields of Java and the highlands of West Papua, the one thing travellers can safely expect is a wide smile from the locals. Indonesians of all stripes share an innate hospitality and a fascination with visitors, and they always find time to stop, meet and greet. Whether it be spontaneous English lessons with bike-riding schoolchildren, casual banter at streetside food stalls or haggling for batiks, interaction with the locals is a highlight of travels in the archipelago.

Scotland

The Scots have survived English invasion, brutal weather and the pain of having the world’s worst goalkeepers. This fighting spirit against insurmountable odds has left them with an extroverted, buoyant demeanour and a blackly humorous nationalism (you’d want to see the funny side after witnessing some of those goalies). Naturally, this attitude rubs off on travellers – Scots are so loyal they want you to share in the good stuff, too.

Turkey

The Turkish people have an unsurpassed reputation for hospitality. With their heavenly cuisine, dreamy coastline and spectacular historical sites, the Turks know there’s no reason to be secretive. Expect warm greetings, countless cups of tea and plenty of time to sit and chat in this charming country.

Some of my best travel memories are of the Balinese (Indonesian) people when i was on the east side of the island in low season. Other travelers were few and far between, but i was stoked to hang out with some very welcoming locals. What a fantastic way to learn about their culture, I'm definitely going back!

Thailand should definitely be on this list (they combine their genuine friendliness with commercial motives very well), but Turkey? Perhaps my Istanbul experience (http://www.razlan.name/blog/category/travel/travel-istanbul-2008/) was too marred by street touts for me to even think Turkey as a friendly country, never mind the friendliest.

Though, I must say, this post made me think about visiting the Irish.

i agree with the ireland choice. Hands down as a generalization, the nicest, friendliest people i've met are irish from the motherland. I was lost in dublin and i asked directions. The person actually stopped to take deliberate time to help me out. I was flabbergasted. No one even does that in the States, sorry ...

USA? I'm from the States, and I've hopped to forty countries with the specific motive of finding kind, fun, friendly people I very much don't at home. But, hey, it's a big place-? Vietnam and Thailand? Hate to say it, but I developed the unfortunate mantra of "I'm a person, not a purse" in those countries as a traveler. (When I spent five weeks in a tiny Thai village, I would say it was different, but hardly top-ten worthy.) How about Cambodia instead?

And, best for last, VENEZUELA! I've never had such a fun, engaged time in my LIFE. Like Technicolor. Off the charts. Perhaps that's why it's not on this one.

Bit of a disappointing list for Lonely Planet.. was hoping to learn something here and I bet there are far more friendlier (and less well known) Countries out there! For example, I used to live in Oman and they liken the Omanis to the Irish of the Middle East - and it's true (but expect them to switch personalities when they get behind a wheel!) Scotland - a top ten contender for friendliest countries of the world? Hmmmmmm.

Indeed I find the Scottish people extremely friendly and helpful. I find the people in Thailand, though, hypocrite and suspicious and always having bad thoughts and they almost never smile, contrary to the myth of the "country of the smiles" that the ministry of tourism apparently launched long ago. I find the Turks in general stiff and strange people that it is hard to communicate with. I find people in Namibia extremely friendly and the people in Zimbabwe overwhelmingly and incredibly friendly. People in Nigeria I find in general so friendly and kind and polite and well-mannered that we should all learn from them.

" An estimated 10000 English troops were sent to Glasgow in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of George Square. This was in spite of a full battalion of Scottish soldiers being stationed at Maryhill barracks in Glasgow at the time.

The Scottish troops were confined to their barracks during this period, with the government unwilling to deploy them against any attempted revolutionary action by their fellow countrymen, fearing that they could be won over to the cause of the workers."

O and as for scottish goal keepers I give you Andy Goram, Allan McGreggor, Niel Alexander.......

Ireland is a good shout (both North and South)America is also a fair shout (with the exceptions of New York and LA)

it's amazing how such ranks get people started. the truth is that everywhere in the world there's friendly people and there's asswholes... in fact, everyone can be friendly or an asswhole depending on his mood or his or her spouse. for instance, if someone asks me directions on the street, believe me, my response will depend on who is asking and how he or she ar asking... on specific terms, asians (in particular southeast asians) are known for the service oriented cultures... latinamericans are known for their festive spirits and colorful personalities... (neither of those things are precisely "freindliness") and american are certainly NOT known for being friendly. They have cool cities and very bright people, and are open to opportunities..but they are conquerors... Neither Coca-Cola, nor McDonald's, nor Exxon, nos the Bushes, nor John Smith are to be characterized as friendly...

Even in the daytime I was touted by too close and too many and had to run across traffic to escape ! I saw a man beat to death with a base ball bat and the police who I thought would stop it just stood aside. In Tanzania thru an open bus window my shirt was slit with a sharp object and my neck purse stolen in a flash. I did not find these area friendly.

  41. 22 May 2012 9:09PM flyingorange Report this comment

These lists are always subjective, and "friendliest" even more, because it may mean one thing for one person and a different thing for another. Let me make an example: 1) Turkey, we go to a bakery and order some food, then go outside and sit on the stairs to eat. The workers invited us in, gave us a table and chair and we even got free tea.

    2) Thailand, we bought some food in a 7-eleven and sit outside to eat. A woman comes to us and tells us that after we're finished we must throw away the garbage in the bin because foreigners always leave trash behind. There are other such examples and Thailand is definitely not on my "friendly list", despite the smiles.

  42. 22 May 2012 9:10PM flyingorange Report this comment

I see that Syria is not mentioned here, while they are probably one of the friendliest people on Earth, in tough competition with the Iranians. When you get invited in Thailand or Fiji or Ireland to someone's home and you get to stay there for 5 days with all your food paid, talking to the family and friends and even local wise men, then I'll admit that those countries deserve to be in this list.

That said, small town USA and the north of Canada are amazingly friendly. Calgary airport has volunteers in stetsons calling out 'Welcome to Calgary' with a huge smile as you step off the plane. Makes you smile right back. Also great is Northern Cyprus where the Turks have less oriental reserve than the mainland and tiny 'dorpies' right in the middle of the Karoo in South Africa- we felt like family after a few days. In most parts of Africa I've visited the people are welcoming and quick to smile, especially poor old Zimbabwe where God knows they have little enough to smile about, and Egypt which has widespread poverty and a lot of recent turmoil.

Probably the LEAST friendly people I've EVER met: they shout at you, are bossy, treat tourists like they're dumb, they don't actually WANT foreigners there. Colombians, on the other hand, were the friendliest people I have EVER encountered on my travels, they treat everyone like long-lost friends and go through great lengths to make you feel welcome - and NOT because they want your money. Thai people, on the other hand, look at tourists like they're walking dollars and use every possible trick to get money off them. Of course I'm generalising here, but that's the feeling I got from these places.

In my 50 years I've visited 47 countries and lived in seven, and Colombia - where I've lived the past 10 years - has the friendlies people I have ever met. Especially Paisa's! Other one's I'd put on the list are Peru, Ecuador, and Australia.

Dear fellows from Loleny Planet. I am vewry disappointed to see that instead of telling people about the cleanliness, beauty, hospitality of hotels, Inns, resorts or b&b to visit you fell into a muddy argument that divides people in the world as friendly or not friendly. It is absurd and it is not of your standing. I run a hotel in Mexico, I am Italian. I am friendly and charming to my guests. How would you classify me? Mexican because I live here? Italian? or white, black, Jew, buddist, Cristian??? I am so sorry, but I am very deceived from Lonely Planet. Instead of searching and rating places to teach turists where to go, you are directing them into opportune countries of someone's need. I think I am going to cancel my subscription to you.

Your depiction of Ireland is outdated and insulting. "The Troubles" were over in 1998! Since then they have had a boom (you may have heard of the Celtic Tiger) and a bust that has left them less than cheerful. There are regions of the USA where people are more friendly than others but the areas that are not friendly creates a negative skew.

I have found people friendly in most places I've been to simply because most people around the world are farly friendly and I suspect that some of the people who have found people unfriendly are those who travel with a superior attitude and those who make no attempt to learn a few words of the local language. A couple of comments in particular require comment though. I agree with Bluelord. I am an Englishman who lives in England about 30 minutes from the Welsh border. Apart from its beauty I like going to Wales because I find the people friendly. Last year I cycled through Germany, sometimes quite off the beaten track. If I stopped and looked at a map someone would come up and offer to help me. I'd say the Germans are probably nicer than Bluecomment, who doesn't sound very nice at all. Next minute he shouted and came running down the road after me. Had I offended him? Far from it - his friend had just brought his breakfast and he wanted me to join him - chappatis, abricot jam, lots of strong tea. He was also a doctor and spoke English quite well. This was only one of several such incidents and I still think of Pakistanis (at least those of the north) as the friendliest people I met in about 60 countries. However, this was before the events of 2001 - not sure how friendly they would be towards westerners today. Even MOST of the Embassy staff around the world are amazing. However, as an institution, Turkey is about as unwelcoming to foreigners as can be. The business community sees you as a walking purse. Never buy anything from a shop where the prices aren't marked, unless you're willing to pay three times the actual value. Taxis in Istanbul are notorious for taking a circuitous route to run up the meter to as much as 3-4 times the appropriate amount, and when you call their hand on it, they play ignorant. If you can overlook the frustrations of being overcharged, run around in circles when trying to do something, and incomprehensible logic, the history and culture, combined with a wonderful group of people, is worth a visit. If you're easily frustrated, visit, but don't try to live there.

Culturally & historically it´s among one of the most hospitable nations on earth and there are good reasons for it: being on the route between East & West, Silk road passing there, economically rich enough to not depend on the money raised by tourism or each single tourist, being not a touristy country offering the advantage of being treated as a guest. If you think Turkey is friendly then you definitely should think of Iran as over friendly or better said hospitable. And I wonder what Vietnam does on this list being one of the most hated countries between a huge number of travelers exactly because of the greediness of its population & its urge to get reach at your expense!

I agree, from my own experience, that the USA and Ireland rank among the friendliest. In the USA even the guy at immigration was friendly and in spite of long queues had a sense of humour. By far the majority of people went out of their way to be helpful, and interested in someone with a different background and set of life stories of their own. As for Ireland - time didn't matter. Always time for a chat!

Regarding USA, not friendly towards foreigners at all. Forget it, unless maybe New Yorkers, which is filled with foreigners anyway. Personally, I found New Yorkers very nice.

I had a fabulous experience in Java, Bali, and Lombok, though they certainly do want to make money from you.

Regarding Vietnam, I agree with complete dismissal from the list. But Vietnam is a very tragic paradox. I found 90% of the people to be warm and sincerely friendly, but 10% are liars, cheats, and crooks who don't want foreigners in their country and their whole purpose is to get as much money out of them while they are there. They treat you so badly, they know you won't go back, so they make sure to extract as much out of you as possible the first time. In many ways, you cannot blame them, their history with foreigners in their country has been one of murder. But many young people really embrace foreigners, which as I said is 90%. Unfortunately, the rotten 10% spoil it for everybody. As a traveller, you become so wary, it becomes difficult to trust anyone you encounter.

United States? A few years ago I was back packing in western Europe Where I met a couple of young guys from the US. They were telling everybody they were Canadian so they wouldn't run into trouble. I am a frequent traveller and have always loved The Lonely Planet. However, lately the US has been over promoted in all articles. This is not a hatred of the US. I am traveling there next month. I just want honesty and facts from the reporters and writers. Not an advertisement of their own country.

somebody named Cuba...if there's a country where you get harassed ANYWHERE it's Cuba. People there are the greatest theater-players in showing affection to you as long as you pay in euro's or -even better- in American dollars. They except you as a foreigner to pay even to talk to them, ask them the way, open the door for you. And believe me, I visited much more poor countries than Cuba, it doesn't have something to do with poverty. It's a attitude: the foreigner is there to be robbed.

Only 2 weeks ago I came back from Vietnam. I really don't understand how this country made it to the top of the list when their people are aggressive, liars and stealers. the older they are the worse it was. Everywhere we were from the South to the North we were only " walking dollars" for them. I traveled around the world, visited poor and rich countries, remote parts as well as very well known places, I came in contact with all sorts of people but I never come across to so many awful people. also there is no law and order what so ever, the Police is corrupt and not supportive. My iPhone was stolen by the taxi driver who took me to Hanoi airport, I went to report it, the Police laughed at me. few days later on another friend had his iPhone stolen in Hanoi, he located but the Police refused to help him recovering it. when I arrived in Bangkok I believed I'm in another world. yes, Thai people are truly friendly.

U.S.A and Thailand yes. Vietnam and Indonesia.. not so sure. Bit hit and miss with scams and fake friendliness. But no Syria, no Pakistan...these are the friendliest countries I've been to. Serbia would be up high on my list too. And India.

Friendly or not. It depends on what race you are. Most western countries (white people) will be friendly to white people. But I, as an asian got an egg and the finger.

Vietnam is the rudest country I've ever been. Laos is the best in South-East Asia. Lao are much more sincere in their friendliness than Thais who are just tired with tourist hordes but try to keep smiling and making business. Georgia is fantastic. I really like Istanbul people!
