  9. Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest costs around €8, payable with special tokens sold by the tents) More than 6.2 million people guzzled 6.7 million litres of beer during Oktoberfest 2007. Blame it all on the 'Mass'; that towering mug holding a full litre of golden nectar that sets you back about eight euros - and right back on your heels. Oktoberfest is indeed the world's largest drink-a-thon where normally prim and sober citizens from every country in the world lurch around like drunken rats.

'Tradition' may be everything at the Oktoberfest, but 'convention' gets thrown right out the window.

It's all eerily disciplined, even quiet, until - at the stroke of noon - the Munich mayor opens the fi…

  10. Surfing

Munich is famous for beer, sausages and surfing. Yep, you read that right. Just go to the southern tip of the English Garden at Prinzregentenstrasse and you'll see scores of people leaning over a bridge to cheer on wetsuit-clad daredevils as they 'hang 10' on an artificially created wave in the Eisbach. It's only a single wave, but it's a damn fine one. In fact, the surfers are such an attraction, the tourist office even includes them in its brochures.

But if park director Thomas Köster gets his way, the fun will soon be a thing of the past. You see, surfing or even swimming in the Eisbach is actually verboten. And for good reason. It looks pretty harmless, but the littl…

    Olympic Stadium Tours

Don't have time to make it to the Alps for climbing around lofty heights? No sweat. Just head to the Olympic Stadium for a walk on the roof. Yup, the roof; that famously contorted steel and plexiglass confection is ready for its close-up. Just like on the mountains, you'll be roped and hooked up to a steel cable as you clamber around under the eagle-eyed supervision of an experienced guide showering you with fascinating details about the stadium's architecture and construction.

Unusual perspectives are guaranteed, but the vertigo-prone might want to take a pass on this one. Minimum age is 10 and expeditions last two hours. Wear rubber-soled shoes.

    True daredevils might als…

  16. Stuttgarter Weinwanderweg

The Stuttgarter Weinwanderweg is the name given to two walking trails that head through vineyards so lush and pastoral that you'll hardly believe that some of the world's most advanced motorcar factories are just over the hill.

One begins 3km due north of the Hauptbahnhof at the Pragsattel light rail station (on the U5 or U6 line) and goes northeast to the Max-Eyth-See. The other is a circuit that takes you from the Obertürkheim train station (on the S1), 6km east of the Hauptbahnhof, via Uhlbach (served by buses 62 and 65 from Obertürkheim) to Untertürkheim (also on the S1) and, if you like, back to Obertürkheim.

    Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme

Built in 1913 as a municipal bathhouse on the site of a Roman steam bath, the gorgeous Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme are fed by water naturally heated to 66.4°C. Ask for a sheet in English on 'bathing like the ancient Romans' by availing yourself of a succession of saunas and pools. Bathrobes and towels can be rented; swimsuits are unnecessary as, in keeping with Saunakultur, this place is 'textile-free'. Actually, bathing suits are completely forbidden only in the sauna (you just wear a towel); elsewhere, nudity is merely a recommendation. Tuesday is for women only. The minimum age is 16.

    Top-Tour Hamburg

As with boats, there is a confusing array of bus tours, although these aren't quite such a quintessential Hamburg experience. Top-Tour Hamburg offers a choice of four tours, the most popular being the eponymous Top-Tour. This passes all the leading sights in a double-decker bus during jump-on, jump-off 1½-hour sightseeing tours.

You can board at the Kirchenallee exit of the train station and Landungsbrücken, plus the Rathaus, St Michaeliskirche, the Reeperbahn or Speicherstadt. Commentary is in German and English.

Also check out HHB or ask the tourist office about other deals.

    Friedrichsbad

If it's the body of Venus and the complexion of Cleopatra you desire, take the waters in the sumptuous 19th-century Friedrichsbad. As Mark Twain put it: 'after 10 minutes you forget time; after 20 minutes, the world'. Modesty, rheumatic aches and the nudity of fellow bathers are soon forgotten as you slip into the regime of steaming, scrubbing, hot-cold bathing and dunking in the Roman-Irish Bath. With its cupola, mosaics and column-ringed pool, the bathhouse is the vision of a neo-Renaissance palace.

  28. Industrial Heritage Trail

Most of the smokestacks and mines are quiet today, but the Ruhrgebiet has embraced its heritage by cleverly converting many of its 'cathedrals of industry' into museums, concert halls, cinemas, restaurants, lookouts, playgrounds and other venues. About 25 of them are linked along the 400km Industrial Heritage Trail that takes in such cities as Dortmund, Essen, Duisburg and Bochum. Most sites are also served by public transport.

The route's central visitors' centre is at the Zollverein colliery complex in Essen.

  29. Stern & Kreisschiffahrt

A lovely way to experience Berlin on a warm day is from the deck of a boat cruising along the city’s rivers, canals and lakes. Tours range from one-hour spins around the historic centre (from €7) to longer trips to Schloss Charlottenburg and beyond (from €16). Most offer live narration in English and German. Stern & Kreisschiffahrt is one of the main operators. The season runs from April to mid-October. The maps in the Neighbourhoods chapters indicate embarkation points.
