  16. Stryn Summer Ski Centre

Nowhere near the town of Stryn, despite its name, this ski centre is in fact on the Tystigen outlier of Jostedalsbreen, at its northernmost point. Here is Norway’s most extensive and best known summer skiing, and most of those photos of bikini-clad skiers you see around were snapped here. There are six red runs, one blue and a black. The longest alpine run extends for 2100m with a drop of 530m, and there are also 10km of cross-country ski tracks. A ski bus runs from Stryn (Nkr150 return, one hour) at 9.15am and returns from the ski centre at 4.15pm, roughly between mid-June and mid-July, depending upon snow conditions. Drivers will enjoy the scenic Gamle Strynefjellsve…

    Gellért

Soaking in this art nouveau palace, open to men and women in separate sections, has been likened to taking a bath in a cathedral. The eight thermal pools range in temperature from 26°C to 38°C, and the water – high in calcium, magnesium and hydrogen carbonate – is good for pains in the joints, arthritis and blood circulation. The outdoor pools (open May to September) have a wave machine and nicely landscaped gardens. The cost of admission with a cabin is reduced to 2700Ft after 5pm from May to September; and from October to April after 5pm Monday to Friday, and after 2pm Saturday and Sunday. You get 400Ft back in you stay less than two hours on your daytime ticket.

    Ambassador Hotel Spa Center

There’s no atmosphere to speak of at the spa centre of this shabby modern hotel just off Divan Yolu, but all treatments are private, meaning that you get the small and pretty hamam all to yourself. Best of all is the fact that the 60- or 75-minute Turkish massage treatment here (bath, scrub and soap massage) includes a 30-minute oil massage given by Zeki Ulusoy. Zeki is trained in sports, remedial and aromatherapy massage and he really knows his stuff – you’ll float out of here at the end of your session. You can also book the hamam for private use (€20 per person per hour) or book a 45-minute Turkish bath treatment without the oil massage (€35).

    Rudas

These recently renovated baths are the most Turkish of all in Budapest, built in 1566, with an octagonal pool, domed cupola with coloured glass and massive columns. It’s a real zoo on mixed weekend nights, when bathing costumes are compulsory. Here you get 400Ft back if you leave within two hours after you arrive. If you're interested in just swimming, you can enter the renovated pool separately.

    Király

The four pools here, with water temperatures of between 26°C and 40°C, are genuine Turkish baths erected in 1570 and have a wonderful skylit central dome (though the place is begging for a renovation). Here you get a whopping 1000/500Ft back from your admission deposit if you leave within two/three hours.
