Zimbabwe: Overview

From propping up a bar to propping up a tent, Zimbabwe's got you covered.

With more than a passing resemblance to a National Geographic best-of issue, Zimbabwe is a beautiful country to visit. It boasts the majestic Victoria Falls, magnificent wildlife preserves and the medieval ruins of Great Zimbabwe, as well as the bustling city of Harare.

Travel Warning: Political Crisis - Country in Turmoil

The situation in Zimbabwe remains volatile: travellers are advised to remain vigilant at all times and avoid any public protests. There is an increased security force presence across the country, and demonstrations are being met with increasing violence by the police. President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai have met, for the first time in 10 years, to discuss a power sharing agreement and framework to solve the political crisis which has led to widespread violence in Zimbabwe. Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party estimates 120 of its members have been killed, 5000 abducted and 200,000 forced from their homes by pro-Mugabe malitias.

International leaders condemned Mugabe's 'victory' in the June presidential run-off vote. Mugabe was the sole candidate in the election following Tsvangirai's decision to back out, citing state-sponsored violence. G8 leaders in Japan recently vowed to take action against those in Mugabe's government responsible for violence.

The national economy remains in crisis, with food and fuel shortages common. The government's alleged mishandling of land redistribution has led to poor harvesting and alarmingly low food stocks. Travellers to Zimbabwe should use common sense to bypass obvious dangers and respect any local advice regarding safety. Avoid solo travel and remote areas. Be particularly wary in the Victoria Falls area where thieves have targeted tourists.
