    Suzhou Creek Boat Tours

    New boat tours along Suzhou Creek, which has benefited from a decade-long clean-up project, were scheduled to begin service in April 2010. Tours are expected to take in several new museums, including the Matchbox Museum (2521 West Guangfu Rd; 光复西路 2521 号 ), the Coin Museum (17 West Guangfu Rd, inside the Shanghai Mint; 光复西路 17 号上海造币厂内 ) and the Silk Museum (289 Aomen Rd; 澳门路 289 号; admission free), actually tours of a silk factory.     Mingtang Organic Dining

    The only restaurant in the Cool Docks that seems to have taken off, Mingtang’s earth-coloured tones provide a soothing counterpoint to Shànghǎi’s frenetic energy. The menu (new-wave Chinese) has a selection of organic vegetables, free-range poultry and lots of seafood. Favourites include the fried prawns with apple thousand-island dressing (Y98), roast Mongolian lamb with potato cakes (Y128) and almond-papaya chilled cake (Y32) for dessert.

    Huangpu River

    The Huangpu River offers staggering views of the Bund and riverfront activity. Skip the marathon chug to Wusongkou (Y150, 3½ hours, 2pm) at the Yangzi River mouth for the one-hour trip to Yangpu Bridge (Y50/70 day/night) or the popular 30-minute cruises from the Pearl Dock (Y50/70 day/night) in Lujiazui. Most boats depart from the south end of the Bund, where tickets are sold. It leaves from the southern end of the Bund.

    One Wellness

    A boutique fitness club located in a renovated factory, One Wellness has a gourmet cafe on the premises and in-house massage therapy. Classes range from yoga and taichi to bodypump and aerobics, and the equipment is all state-of-the art. It also boasts the claim of being China’s first carbon- neutral gym. The day rate is Y300; a month-long membership starts at Y1588.

    The Formula One circus roars into town every year at this impressive, state-of-the-art circuit, which is 40 minutes northwest of the city centre. It’s one of the most glamorous events on the Shànghǎi calendar, and tickets, costing Y380 to Y3980, get snapped up quickly. Classes run daily from 6.30am to 8.45pm. One class is Y200; otherwise a year membership (50 classes) is Y6800. Another branch is located near Xīntiāndì.

    Longwu Kung Fu Center

    Coaches from Shànghǎi’s martial arts teams give classes in Chinese, Japanese and Korean martial arts. The largest centre in the city, it also offers children’s classes on weekend mornings and lessons in English. Prices are Y1500/2600/4800 for 3/6/12 months. Kids classes are Y600 for three months.

    Shanghai Swimming Pool

    Public swimming pools in China may not be a first choice for serious swimmers, although they are considerably cheaper than hotel pools. A shop next door sells swimming gear. Tickets are Y25 before 5.30pm, Y30 after. Kids below 1.2m get in for half price. It’s just near Shanghai Stadium.

    BOHDI Adventures

    BOHDI got its start as a cycling club, but it now organises all manner of adventure sports, from climbing to hiking. The out-of-town bike tours are still the best, though. Check their website for trip details. They also hold night-time bike tours of Shànghǎi every Tuesday and Thursday (Y150).

    Megafit

    This gym in the basement of the Hong Kong New World Building is the cheapest place for visitors, with a day rate of Y100 and Y500 for one month. A year-long membership is a very reasonable Y1400. Top-end equipment in the gym, and lots of group classes including taichi, yoga and Pilates.

    Another chain, with facilities including exercise studios, a large range of fitness equipment, a sauna and solarium. It offers classes and personal training, massage and aromatherapy. Non-members can pay around Y200 a day. Otherwise, membership (three months minimum) is Y2100.
