About 10km southwest of Taylor Head Provincial Park, Tangier is one of the best settings for kayaking in the Maritimes. Highly recommended Coastal Adventures Sea Kayaking offers introductions to sea-kayaking (half-/full-day $75/110), rentals (half-/full-day $35/50) and guided trips. The establishment also has a cozy, excellent-value B&B, Paddlers Retreat.
Grasslands National Park
Feel at home on the range in this verdant park between Val Marie and Killdear right on the US border. Here, treeless, rolling grassy hills meet the endless sky. Take a drive through on the self-drive tour or, better yet, camp out – just don't expect shade. That musky odor you smell may not be your tentmate but could be one of the 75 resident bison.
Auyuittuq National Park
Among the globe's most flabbergasting places, Auyuittuq (ah-you-ee-tuk) means 'the land that never melts.' Appropriately, there are plenty of glaciers in this 19,500-sq-km park, plus jagged peaks, vertiginous cliffs and deep valleys. Hikers trek along the 97km Akshayuk Pass (crossing the Arctic Circle) between late June and early September, when it's snow-free.
