Description

Escape the crowds of Rio de Janiero at Petropolis, the beautiful mountain retreat of Brazil's only two emperors. Wander through the Imperial Museum. Pay your respects at Catedral Sao Pedro de Alcantara, the burial place of Brazil's last imperial family. See the stunning glass Crystal Palace built by the French in 1879.

After the 60km drive from Rio de Janeiro you will arrive in Petropolis to explore the Imperial Museum, housing tapestries, antique furniture and jewels. A highlight of your visit is the 1.7kg imperial crown with over 600 diamonds and 77 pearls. The former palace of Dom Pedro II has been restored to its former glory, creating the perfect setting for your trip back in time.

Admire the gothic architecture of Catedral Sao Pedro de Alcantara. Visit the tombstone of Brazil's last emperor, Dom Pedro II and his wife and daughter. Before returning to your hotel in Rio de Janeiro you will see Crystal Palace, a magnificent glass structure imported from France to house exhibitions and events.

Petrópolis -- pretty landscape, pretty city.

    georgiatraveler recommends this,

For some of us, it's fun to tell your friends about a great tourist destination that nobody's ever heard of. Petrópolis is one of those places. The mountains in that part of the State of RdJ, the Mata Atlantica, are beautiful, so even the trip to Petrópolis is a pleasure. If you can skip the Palácio Quitandinha on the way, do skip it -- the tours only show you the outside of it, and it really isn't that much to look at. It looks like some Alpine holiday-camp-cum-indoctrination-center created by Joseph Goebbels for the Hitler Youth. But that's the only bad news. The historic district of Petrópolis itself is very pretty: full of canals, red foot bridges, tropical vegetation, and 19th-Century Brazilian archictecture. It's like a combination of the best characteristics of Sevilla, Amsterdam, New Orleans, Havana, and Savannah. And the Imerial Palace, though not gorgeous by a long shot, is really interesting. It was fun to see all the artifacts of the Western Hemisphere's only monarchy.
