    Adventure Tourism

Run by the ambitious Mr Rashed Husan. Adventure Tourism organises day tours (Tk 800 per person) taking in a tea estate, the Lowacherra National Park, some tribal villages and various other sights of interest in the region. It’s an effective way to tick off all the sights quickly and painlessly, but his guides aren’t very knowledgeable. If he doesn’t find you, you can find him through the Hotel Tea Town. He also rents out bikes (Tk 150 to Tk 200 per day).

  2. Jahangir Enterprises

Good boat tour operators in Mongla include, Jahangir Enterprises. In recent years, the forestry department has banned any independent boats from Mongla (and other towns) from taking tourists on overnight trips into the Sundarbans. This rule was brought in after a couple of nasty incidents involving lost boats.

Nowadays, no matter what boatmen in Mongla may tell you, the only way to travel independently into the Sundarbans from Mongla is on a day trip to the Karamjal Forest Station. With raised walkways, viewing platforms and a small 'zoo' it's hardly the back of beyond, but surprisingly in recent years it's been one of the best places to see a tiger thanks to a lone cat…

    Sadarghat Boat Terminal

Among all the large ships are the tiny wooden ones that you can hire. These are available almost everywhere along the waterfront, though most people hire them from around Sadarghat boat terminal. An increasing number of foreigners in Dhaka are starting to hire boats out, so things are becoming more organised and most boatmen will know what you want to do (a lack of a common language isn’t much of a hindrance). It does however mean that prices are starting to rise and touts are beginning to come to life. The standard rate is Tk 100 per hour but many boatmen will push for a higher price.

  5. Oceanic

Locals assert that St Martin’s is a better place to dive and snorkel than Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. While this might be about as true as Cox’s Bazar being one of the wonders of the world, it is certainly possible to ogle the world beneath the waves here between November and March. Oceanic charge experienced divers Tk 3000 per session with a guide and all equipment. To find it, take a left at the small road at the end of the restaurant strip on the beach; it’s a couple of hundred metres along on the right.

    Guide Tours

The Swatch of No Ground, a deep-water canyon a short way offshore of the Sundarbans, acts as something of a magnet to Brydes whales and bottlenosed dolphins. Between December and February, Guide Tours organises boat trips out to this canyon where schools of up to 750 dolphins have been seen, and whale sightings are virtually guaranteed. It’s a one-day excursion that is added onto the Sundarbans tour at a cost of US$50. You will travel on a scientific boat and in addition to watching whales, you get to watch the scientists at work.
