Fort James

Fort in St John's

Fort James, a small stronghold at the north side of St John’s Harbour, dates back to 1706, but most of what you see today was built in 1739. Still sporting a few of its 36 cannons, a powder magazine and wall remnants, the site drips with atmosphere: it’s moodily run-down and almost always deserted.

A taxi from St John's costs US$12.
