Some of the facilities at the new southern branch of Taipei's Palace Museum were still under construction at the time of research, but were expected to be finished by late 2016. Antique fans will have a field day: you'll find exquisite Buddhist art from Asia's oldest civilisations, excellent displays on Chinese and Japanese tea culture, Asian textiles, and other artefacts of Chinese, Taiwanese or Asian heritage. The architecture is sleek and modern, a stark contrast to the Chinese palace-style mother museum.
Buses depart regularly from Chiayi High Speed Rail Station for the museum. Travel time by bus is about 15 minutes.
