Mauna Kea Polo Club

And now for something completely different: polo! An ancient game involving a ball, mallets and ponies played on an impressive, large field. The games are sponsored by Mauna Kea Polo Club and held 6.4 miles up Old Saddle Rd from Waimea on exclusive Waiki'i Ranch. More Big Island than Long Island, they are very low key, with BBQ eats and T-shirts for sale. Tailgating encouraged.

It’s the perfect excuse for a beautiful drive and picnic, and you might even learn something about polo. Turn west off Old Saddle Rd half-way between the Daniel K Inouye and Mamalahoa Highways; the gate house attendant will let you in.
