Extreme Lava Hike to See Flowing Lava

Leave your Kona or Waikoloa resort or hotel in style in our new high-ceiling Mercedes Benz luxury van.  Your local guide will entertain you with information about the current, past and history of Hawaii as you climb initially to the height of 2000m or 6500 feet.  First we'll make a briefrestroom stop at Mauna Kea County Park, located approximately halfway up Mauna Loa (4169m) and Mauna Kea (4205m).  From there, we'll head down the famous Saddle Road into Hilo for a brief tour of the historical town and a stop at the famous Rainbow Falls, a beautiful tropical waterfall, then on the top rated Big Island Candies cookie factory for cookie and Kona Coffee samples, restroom breaks, and other snacks. Our next stop will be the historic town of Pahoa, where we can see where lava met the town in 2014 and threatened her existence. From Pahoa, we head straight for a quick hike to Kaimu, previously site of the most beautiful black sand beach in Hawaii before it was covered by Pele's eruption in 1990.  We'll spend some time enjoying the new black sand beach at Kaimu and then  straight to the Kalapana trailhead to begin our hike out to see theactive flow. The hike is approximately 2.5 miles each way along a gravel road that passes neardevastated town of Kalapana and the ocean. It's not an easy hike - the terrain is level for most of it but the payoff is often breathtaking!  Recently lava entering the ocean provides a show of steam and sometimes visible flowing lava. We will also take a hike up the pali and onto the lava fields for a picnic-style dinner, photos and possible lava “breakout” moments before beginning our hike back to the van for the ride home.

Hilo Shore Excursion: Lava Forest and Falls

When your cruise ship pulls into port, explore the back roads of Hawaii on this shore excursion to the Big Island's natural waterfalls, rainforest and lava flows. After pickup, Rainbow Falls is the first stop on your 5- to 5.5-hour tour. Known in the Hawaiian language as wainuenue (meaning 'rainbow water'), the cascade flows over a natural lava cave and on sunny mornings rainbows can be seen in the mist of the waterfall.Next, you'll wind along mango groves and trees of the Nanawale Forest Reserve, stopping to check out the lava flow that caused evacuations in the town of Pahoa. Learn how the lava crept into the town, burning a few homes and oozing up against commercial buildings. Along the way and during brief stops, view the dramatic scenery formed when hot lava met the cool sea. Kaimu Black Sand Beach, once the site of Queen's Bath, is about a 15-minute walk over old lava flows. Learn how the small town was destroyed by a lava flow in 1990 and view the active volcanic vent in the distance. Your guide shows you a photo exhibit featuring how the area looked prior to the eruption, now being reclaimed by the rainforest. Afterward, continue on into Lava Tree State Park, where long ago lava burst out of fissures onto ohia trees, leaving indelible lava molds. Visit Ahalanui’s warm springs and see how water travels through lava tubes to become volcanically heated (swimming prohibited).  At Volcanoes National Park, see more evidence of Kilauea volcano and the massive caldera at the Visitor Center overlook, and a walk through a lava tube.Your guide also makes a stop that overlooks sea cliffs where crashing waves are hidden among salt cedar pine trees. Take a drive through a macadamia nut orchard for a sampling and to purchase lunch, and visit the Akatsuka Orchid Gardens before your tour ends with return transport to the cruise terminal.Worry-free Shore Excursion:We will ensure your timely return to the Hilo port for this activity. In the rare event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of-call. If your ship is delayed and you are unable to attend this activity, your money will be refunded.
