Extreme Lava Hike to See Flowing Lava

Leave your Kona or Waikoloa resort or hotel in style in our new high-ceiling Mercedes Benz luxury van.  Your local guide will entertain you with information about the current, past and history of Hawaii as you climb initially to the height of 2000m or 6500 feet.  First we'll make a briefrestroom stop at Mauna Kea County Park, located approximately halfway up Mauna Loa (4169m) and Mauna Kea (4205m).  From there, we'll head down the famous Saddle Road into Hilo for a brief tour of the historical town and a stop at the famous Rainbow Falls, a beautiful tropical waterfall, then on the top rated Big Island Candies cookie factory for cookie and Kona Coffee samples, restroom breaks, and other snacks. Our next stop will be the historic town of Pahoa, where we can see where lava met the town in 2014 and threatened her existence. From Pahoa, we head straight for a quick hike to Kaimu, previously site of the most beautiful black sand beach in Hawaii before it was covered by Pele's eruption in 1990.  We'll spend some time enjoying the new black sand beach at Kaimu and then  straight to the Kalapana trailhead to begin our hike out to see theactive flow. The hike is approximately 2.5 miles each way along a gravel road that passes neardevastated town of Kalapana and the ocean. It's not an easy hike - the terrain is level for most of it but the payoff is often breathtaking!  Recently lava entering the ocean provides a show of steam and sometimes visible flowing lava. We will also take a hike up the pali and onto the lava fields for a picnic-style dinner, photos and possible lava “breakout” moments before beginning our hike back to the van for the ride home.
