Welcome to Kawaihae & Around
Kawaihae is more functional than recreational, a working port 'town' (if such can be said for a settlement that's a couple of blocks long) where fuel tanks and cargo containers give off an industrial sense of identity. For all its compact utilitarianism, there is noteworthy dining, a family beach, decent surf and a historic heiau (temple) toward the south. Scrappy little Kawaihae marks the end of South Kohala resort country and the beginning of North Kohala, which is possessed of an altogether more funky vibe. Sitting as it does on a border, Kawaihae has a hybrid nature; you'll find outfitters catering to the big resorts, and local farmers loading for a community market all on the same block.
