The land along the Akoni Pule Hwy (Hwy 270) remains largely undeveloped, affording spectacular views of the Pacific (and Maui in the distance). This is a beautiful drive where the contrasts of North Kohala are on full display; in the southern portion of Hwy 270, you're surrounded by red rocks, thorn bushes and dusty prairie. As you round the top of the North Kohala peninsula, you leave the dry, rain-less portion of Kohala behind and enter the wet zone. The land becomes noticeably greener – the change is so abrupt it feels as if you'd stepped into a new level in a video game.
The winds here are something fierce, and many trees look as if they've been erected sideways. That's funny – what isn't is the way the wind can sometimes even shift your car. Be particularly aware of these conditions if you choose to cycle out here.
