Oost (East) is one of Amsterdam's most culturally diverse neighbourhoods, a melting pot of Moroccan and Turkish enclaves. It's an area that grew up in the 19th century, with grand buildings and wide boulevards. The large English-style Oosterpark was laid out in 1861, while lush Flevopark, further east, dates from when this area was a country retreat. Beyond this is Amsterdam's newest neighbourhood, the IJburg, built across several islands, with the city beach.
