In a country known for its bizarre festivals, Tarazona’s Cipotegato takes the weirdness to a new level. The star of the show is a hapless harlequin dressed in red, green and yellow, who emerges from Ayuntamiento at noon on 27 August and runs through the streets while getting pelted with tomatoes by practically everyone in town.
The event is the starting gun for the week-long Fiestas de San Atilano. It's descended from an old tradition whereby every year a prisoner was given the chance to win his/her freedom by trying to out-run a stone-throwing mob. Somewhere along the line the stones were replaced by tomatoes, and the prisoner was reincarnated as a harlequin.
