Heiðmörk Nature Reserve

A nature reserve since 1950, this suburban open space is only about 18km southeast of the city center, but it feels like an entirely different planet. Walk among towering Sitka spruce trees and little lakes. Wander across Rauðhólar (Red Hills), a collection of vibrant red craters that are part of larger Elliðaárhraun lava field (not to be confused with Reykjavík's large Elliðaárdalur park). Explore natural caves. Go for a hike, check out the wildflowers or simply take in the silence and solitude at this nearly 32 sq km oasis.
