Older kids will most enjoy this museum on the eastern edge of Brackenridge Park. The Witte (pronounced ‘witty’) is educational but engaging, with hands-on explorations of natural history, science and Texas history. At press time, the museum was preparing to open the New Witte, the result of a 170,0000-sq-ft expansion project. Look for a dinosaur gallery, a prehistoric peoples exhibit and immersive wildlife dioramas. A replica of the winged Quetzalcoatlus dinosaur will hang above the foyer.
Outside, don't miss the Science Treehouse, a high-tech activity center in back of the museum building. It's a hit with all ages, even the really big kids (aka parents). The museum is free on Tuesdays from 3pm to 8pm.
