Royal Exchange

Historic Building in The City

The Royal Exchange was founded by 16th-century merchant Thomas Gresham as a centre for commerce and trade, with its original building officially opened by Elizabeth I in 1570. The imposing, colonnaded, neoclassical building that stands here today is the third on the site, built in 1844. It ceased functioning as a financial institution in the 1980s and now houses upmarket shops, cafes and restaurants.
