The small and somnolent town of Appomattox has one major claim to fame: this is where general Robert E Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to general Ulysses S Grant, in effect ending the Civil War. These days, Civil War enthusiasts and history buffs head here to visit the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park and American Civil War Museum, and to shop in a scattering of downtown antique shops specializing in Civil War memorabilia. The latter are open on weekends only.
