Welcome to Columbus
Set along the Chattahoochee River, the boundary between Georgia and Alabama, Columbus is the third-largest city in Georgia. Nicknamed 'Fountain City' due to its unusually large number of water features, it has an easily walkable historic center. Coca-Cola inventor John Pemberton settled here in the 1850s and is buried here at the Linwood Cemetery. The city's other claim to fame is its human-made rafting course – the longest urban white-water rafting experience in the world.
Around 7000 students attend Columbus State University, and the local residents and academics champion the local arts. Venues of note include the old (and supposedly haunted) Springer Opera House and Riverside Theatre Complex.
