Welcome to Paonia
For its size, Paonia offers a surprising combination of natural beauty, working-class society and liberal culture. It's the home of High Country News, one of the country’s most outspoken environmental publications. Surrounded by farms and wildlands, it also has a bundle of late-19th-century buildings in superb condition. Coal mining is still a significant local industry. Today most of its residents are a mix of coal miners, farmers (also cultivating the state's newest cash crop – pot) and boomers gone off the grid.
