Welcome to Deventer
Deventer surprises. It's at its best on a beautiful August night, with a wander among the Hanseatic ghosts along the twisting old-town streets searching out the odd detail in the ancient facades. What looks like a crack in the wall is really a tiny passage to the IJssel. Then there's the Havenkwartier, a once-thriving, now-derelict, harbour area where young creatives are turning heads with funky new hotels and eating spaces.
Deventer was already a bustling mercantile port by AD 800, and it maintained its prosperous trading ties for centuries – evidence of which you'll see everywhere in its sumptuously detailed old buildings.
