21c Museum Hotel Lexington

Top choice

This downtown design hotel is marked by twisted sidewalk lampposts – hand-blown in Venice – outside its entrance. A Louisville transplant that's now in several states, it's more like a museum you can sleep in, with four contemporary art galleries throughout the hotel (as well as permanent local art on each floor).

The 88 modern rooms are a bit less edgy, but feature colorful, clean-lined furniture, mostly king beds and wonderful Lexington views. The 21c is easily the city's hippest hotel.
