Fresh from a major refurbishment, Aberdeen's art gallery eschews the traditional arrangement of its collections by historical period in favor of themes. For example, Gallery 10 (French Impressions) compares and contrasts the works of French Impressionists with contemporary Scottish artists who were inspired by them – William McTaggart, Samuel Peploe, Francis Cadell – while Gallery 16 (Shoreline) looks at the influence of Scotland's coast on landscape artists such as Joan Eardley.
Other highlights include the wide-ranging works of larger-than-life Aberdeenshire artist-adventurer James McBey (1883–1959), and Gallowgate Lard, a chilling, ghostly self-portrait by Glaswegian painter Ken Currie (born 1960).
