Welcome to Herðubreið
Icelanders call Herðubreið (pronounced hair-the-breth), its most distinctive mountain (1682m), the ‘Queen of the Mountains’. Majestic Herðubreið (meaning ‘Broad Shoulders’) is visible for miles around, and it crops up time and again in the work of local poets and painters, entranced by its beauty.
It's a móberg mountain, formed by subglacial volcanic eruptions. In fact, if Vatnajökull was to suddenly be stripped of ice, Grímsvötn and Kverkfjöll would probably emerge looking more or less like Herðubreið.
