Welcome to Sudbury
Sudbury sits in the heart of the Stour Valley, a landscape of pastoral hills, comely villages, timber-framed houses and elegant churches. The surrounding area inspired the celebrated portrait and landscape painter Thomas Gainsborough (1727–88) and his birthplace is the key reason many people visit.
This bustling market town was also the model for Charles Dickens' fictional Eatanswill in The Pickwick Papers (1837). Sudbury prospered during the wool trade and small-scale silk weaving continues to this day.
