Welcome to Aucapata & Iskanwaya
While most of Aucapata’s very few visitors want to see Iskanwaya – somewhat optimistically dubbed ‘Bolivia’s Machu Picchu’ – they may well take one look at the 1500m descent to the ruins (and the corresponding climb back up) and seek out the small Iskanwaya museum in the village itself. That would be a shame. The spectacular setting, marred ever so slightly by a new gold mine, is worth the journey alone. And the chance to explore a sight like this in absolute solitude is a rare treat indeed.
