Drowned churches around the world

St Ivan Rilski Church  in Bulgaria is the only remaining evidence of the village of Zapalnya,  completely submerged in 1965 when a dam was built by the communist government.   

The church steeple that dates from 1895 is now one of the most popular landmark in the country for photographers, appearing regularly in Instagram feeds.  

It is one of many churches around the world that are now submerged in flooded rivers and lakes….
