In its heyday, the village of Palatka (pronounced puhl-at-kuh), almost midway between St Augustine and Gainesville, was the furthest south you could travel by steamship, and boasted more than 7000 hotel rooms for wealthy snowbirds. Today, visitors are trickling back to this sweet, sleepy-verging-on-comatose town for fishing, Memorial weekend's Blue Crab Festival, and simply to get away from the coastal crowds.
