Welcome to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea
In the late 1800s southern Florida was a wild frontier, home to a few dozen Seminole families and some hardy settlers. Remnants of this early history can be found in the flow of beachside communities north of Fort Lauderdale along the Intracoastal Waterway. This includes Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, the closest community to Fort Lauderdale. If you enter from the busy highway you'll find it hard to distinguish from Fort Lauderdale's city sprawl. However, turn coastwards for a mile, and you'll find yourself in a pretty town with a laid-back, beach resort feel.
