The fabulous Stedelijk Museum (stedelijk.nl; adult/child €22.50/free) is an impressive, light, bright, modern art museum, displaying artworks from its 90,000-strong collection that dates from 1870 onwards.

Of the Stedelijk's vast repository, some 500 works are displayed in the permanent collection presentation at any one time. While it rotates, you're likely to see works by Monet, Picasso, Kandinsky, Matisse, Chagall, Warhol, Rothko, De Kooning and more. It's housed in a gabled, red-brick, Dutch Renaissance–style masterpiece designed by Amsterdam city architect AM (Adriaan Willem) Weissman in 1895. Temporary installations of the latest in contemporary art show in its 2012-opened wing that's known as "the Bathtub" (for reasons that are immediately apparent).

The entrance incorporates the Don Quixote Sculpture Hall, showcasing works by sculptors such as Henry Moore, Anne Imhof and Damien Hirst. There's free access (no ticket required) when the museum's open, and after-hours views of the illuminated sculptures.
