Welcome to Andøya
Andøya is long, narrow and flat except for the mountains on its western flank. Its main calling card comes, not surprisingly, from the sea. The 1000m-deep, dark, cold waters of its northwestern shore attract abundant stocks of squid, including some very large specimens indeed, and these in turn attract the squid-loving sperm whales. The result is fairly reliable whale-watching from late May to the middle of September, centred on the town of Andenes at the island's northern end.
Andenes, which has an unlikely but fascinating space centre, is the only place of any size, but other nature safaris depart from the tiny ports of Bleik and Stave, about 10km and 25km southwest of the town.
