Welcome to Khirbet Tannour
The King’s Highway south of Karak gradually descends from a brooding piece of black volcanic hillside into the impressive but arid Wadi Hasa (the biblical Zered Valley). Attempts at tomato growing are in evidence, but it’s hard to encourage the rocky topsoil into production in an otherwise wild and thermally active landscape. However, water does bubble up in other places, most notably the nearby hot springs of Hammamat Burbita and Hammamat Afra.
The highway skirts a reservoir, above which looms a small, conical hill. A steep 15-minute hike leads off the highway to the top of the hill for panoramic views and the ruined temple of Khirbet Tannour.
