Chiesa dei Gesuati

Church in Dorsoduro

The fact that Tiepolo’s ceiling frescoes (1737–39) star St Dominic is hardly surprising given that this baroque church – designed by Giorgio Massari and completed in 1735 – was built for the Dominicans. Overwhelming grief grips Mary in Tintoretto’s sombre 1565 Crucifixion, a painting subsequently restored by Giambattista Piazzetta. Altogether lighter is Sebastiano Ricci's Saints Peter and Thomas with Pope Pius V (1730–33), complete with comical cherubim performing celestial tumbling routines.
