Welcome to Christianshavn
Christianshavn channels Amsterdam with its snug canals, outdoor cafes and alternative attitude. Located on the city's eastern flank, the quarter was established by Christian IV in the early 17th century as a commercial centre and also as a military buffer for the expanding city. That it recalls Amsterdam is no coincidence, its network of boat-lined waterways is modelled after those in Holland. Equally reminiscent of hyper-liberal Amsterdam is the area's most famous attraction, the free-spirited, hash-scented neighbourhood of Christiania.
